Writing a novel is a journey filled with unexpected challenges and rewarding moments. When I completed my debut novel, Run-in with a Royal, I thought the hardest part was over. Yet, preparing for the release of Book 2 in the Royals of Marvidinia series has shown me how much a writer’s process can evolve. This post explores that evolution, from the intense editing of my first book to the complex plotting of a series, and how AI tools have become an unexpected but valuable partner in my process.

The Challenges and Triumphs of Editing My First Book
Finishing the first draft of Run-in with a Royal felt like crossing a finish line. However, the real work began with editing. Editing my debut novel was a steep learning curve. I had to shift from the excitement of creation to the discipline of revision.
One major challenge was spotting inconsistencies in the plot and character development. For example, I realized halfway through editing that a key character’s motivation wasn’t clear, which affected the story’s emotional impact. Fixing this meant some necessary rewrites and even deleting most of one chapter, which was frustrating but ultimately delivered a better result.
On the positive side, editing taught me to be ruthless with my own writing. I learned to cut scenes that didn’t serve the story, even if I loved them. I learned to avoid favorite, overused words and phrases. This process improved my storytelling skills and helped me develop a sharper eye for pacing and dialogue.
Writing Book 2: A Different Experience
Starting Book 2 in the Royals of Marvidinia series was both exciting and intimidating. Unlike the first book, where everything was new, I now had to build on an existing world and characters. This brought a new set of challenges.
The most significant difference was the pressure to fulfill readers' expectations. I aimed to maintain the charm and emotional depth of the first book while introducing new conflicts and character development. Given that my stories are narrated in third person limited point of view, I had to familiarize myself with the voices and inner thoughts of new main characters. I was no longer inside Marcus's or Juliana's mind, but in Nicco's and Chess's. They are entirely different individuals with unique histories and motivations, and the text needed to reflect that. Writing Book 2 felt more like sculpting than painting: I had a rough shape from Book 1, but I needed to refine and expand it with care.
Interestingly, the writing flow was smoother this time. I had a clearer sense of the characters’ voices and the world’s rules. Yet, I also faced moments of doubt, wondering if the story was strong enough to stand alongside the debut.
The Complexities of Plotting and Character Management in a Series
Writing a series adds layers of complexity. Plotting Book 2 required careful planning to ensure continuity and avoid contradictions. I kept detailed notes on character traits, timelines, and key events to maintain consistency.
Managing multiple characters across books meant balancing their individual arcs with the overall story. For instance, a secondary character in Book 1 became a major player in Book 2, which required me to revisit and deepen their backstory.
I also had to think about the pacing across the series. Each book needed to have its own complete arc while contributing to a larger narrative, allowing it to stand alone yet remain part of a cohesive series. This balancing act was both challenging and rewarding, as it allowed me to explore different themes and relationships in depth.
How AI Has Become a Valuable Tool in Series Management
AI tools have revolutionized my approach to managing the complexities of a multi-book series and the world it encompasses. Initially, I was hesitant to use AI due to fear of the unknown and my lack of experience with it. However, I discovered that AI can significantly support my efforts in useful ways.
For example, I use AI to assist in editing by identifying grammar and spelling errors. AI has been particularly helpful in overseeing my world-building efforts by managing updates to crucial reference documents. These documents include my series reference, which defines the series canon; the location reference, detailing descriptions of the palace, the capital city, road names, and other specifics; the style guide, ensuring consistency in character voicing, themes, and motifs throughout the stories; and a character reference, which outlines the traits and appearance of every main character.
Before drafting a new story, I begin by creating a document that outlines the entire plot from start to finish. I already have a clear direction of every book in the series, though I often take some detours once I start writing. I then input these story details into an AI tool to generate a basic outline, which serves as the book's roadmap. Before drafting an individual chapter, I use AI to create a chapter reference drawn from the plan in the book outline. This detailed reference document specifies what I intend to achieve in that chapter's pages, including decisions I've already made about the story and highlighting unresolved decisions that I need to address during writing. While this may seem like extensive planning, it's a process that works for me because I'm a planner. It also keeps me on track and focused most of the time. However, I never let my plans restrict my creativity. For instance, in the upcoming release of Book 2, King Maximo makes several unplanned appearances on the page. During the story's drafting, he seemed to have significant things to say, so I stepped aside and let him speak.
Tips for Fellow Writers on Using Technology to Enhance Creativity
If you’re a writer curious about integrating technology into your process, here are some practical tips:
Employ AI editing tools for grammar and style checks, but always review suggestions critically to keep your unique voice.
Ask your AI assistant to manage detailed digital notes on your series’ world-building, character details and to help track continuity.
Experiment with AI-generated prompts to challenge yourself with new writing exercises.
Balance technology use with traditional writing habits. Don’t rely solely on AI; use it to complement your skills and aid in planning and management, never as a replacement for your own creativity.
Writing any novel can be a journey of growth and discovery. Writing a interconnected series of novels based on a common world with regularly appearing characters only adds to the challenge. From the intense editing of my debut novel to the intricate plotting of Book 2 and now I as I continue with writing Book 3, I’ve learned to embrace those challenges and adapt my process. AI has become a helpful ally, offering practical support. For writers navigating their own paths, blending creativity with responsible technology use can open new doors, offer improved efficiency and allow writers to devote more time to deepening their craft.
