Romantic suspense is a genre that captivates readers with its blend of love and intrigue. It’s a thrilling ride where passion meets peril, and every twist keeps you on the edge of your seat. I’m excited to share insights about my new romantic suspense novel series that promises to deliver just that!

The Inspiration Behind the Series

Every great story begins with inspiration. For me, it was a combination of personal experiences and a deep love for the genre. I’ve always been fascinated by the complexities of relationships, especially when they are tested by external forces. The idea of placing characters in high-stakes situations where their love is challenged by suspenseful elements sparked my creativity.

Personal Experiences

Drawing from my own life, I realized that love often flourishes in unexpected circumstances. Whether it’s a chance encounter or a shared adventure, these moments can lead to profound connections. In my stories, I wanted to explore how love can be both a refuge and a source of tension and how the challenges we face serve to either make us or break us, particularly in relationships.

Genre Influence

Romantic suspense has a rich history, with authors like Nora Roberts paving the way. Over the years, as the genre has grown, I have happily consumed the offerings of laugh-out-loud romantic comedies, thrilling military romances, regency and historical romances, as well as quiet, tender western romances. While the stories and settings might change, all of these share some of the same characteristics - captivating characters, witty and compelling dialogue, and enough twists and turns in the plot to keep me turning the page. The authors of these books inspired me to craft my own narrative with the goal of blending the emotional depth of romance with the adrenaline rush of suspense, to create a unique reading experience.

Overview of the Series

The Royals of Marvidinia series consists of five novels, each featuring a different couple navigating their own challenges while uncovering secrets that threaten their lives and love. Here’s a brief overview of what I have planned for the first two books and the family members who will feature in books three, four and five.

Book One: Run-in with a Royal

In Run-in with a Royal, we meet Juliana Treymont, a fiercely independent doctoral student at Oxford University who has no time for anything other than completing her research and paying her rent. She's had to be. She's been on her own since she was seven. However, she learns it's hard to maintain your independence when you're unconscious on a rainy roadside in Oxfordshire. When Juliana is discovered there by an incognito prince and his bodyguard best friend, they take matters into their own hands. Marcus Gratiani, the crown prince of Marvidinia, a small island nation in the Mediterranean, is four weeks away from completing his post-graduate degree. While his honor requires that he help the unconscious woman, he draws the line at allowing that assitance to blow his cover. Together with his bodyguard Nicco, they take Juliana to their Oxford flat to recuperate. Through a series of unfortunate events and miscommunication, Juliana wakes to discover she is unemployed and homeless. Marcus convinces her to stay at his flat and what follows is a slow-burn romance that builds steadily between them despite their resistance. But not all is well. Marcus has failed to tell Juliana the truth of his identity and his control over the timeline for revealing himself is shattered when he discovers that Juliana is in danger. They flee to Marividinia but find safety is an illusion, as the danger has followed them. Can Marcus keep Juliana safe? Will Juliana find a way to make peace with her past and trust that she can depend on others? Their chemistry is undeniable, but danger lurks and truths must be revealed. Will they find a way to overcome the obstacles and risk everything for love?

Book Two: Run with a Royal (working title)

Run with a Royal, book 2 in the Royals of Marvidinia series will follow the story of Chess, a royal princess and aspiring event planner and Nicco, the chief of security for the Crown Prince of Marividina. As Marcus's sister and as a royal princess, Nicco knows that Chess is off-limits but that doesn't mean he can control the feelings for her that he's been hiding for quite some time. Chess has other ideas and sees no reason for Marcus not to admit what she already knows to be true. But Marcus is a complicated man trying to overcome the effects of a difficult childhood. His job requires focus, diligence, and control - skills he regularly employs in his encounters with Chess. When Chess finally pushes Nicco past the end of his ability to manage himself, Nicco makes a decision that places Chess on a path of danger no once could have predicted. Alone in Paris, Chess exerts her independence while she continues to carry a torch for Nicco and plots how best to force him to his senses. When the palace uncovers a kidnapping plot that threatens Chess's life, the king orders Nicco to Paris to bring his only daughter home. The kidnapper strikes before Nicco arrives but Nicco will tear the city down to bring Chess to safety. Chess has no doubt that someone will come for her, but she has her own ideas and won't sit around waiting to be rescued. Will Nicco and Chess succeed in escaping the kidnapper's threat? Will Chess find a way to reach beyond Nicco's inpenetrable armor of self-control? Will Nicco let go of his self-doubts and trust in the love of a found family? Book Three: Title TBD

Book 3 of the Royals of Marvidinia series will focus on Fin's story. Fin is an enigma to his family. Born the second son of the king, he has chosen a life of service in his nation's military. His skills are exceptionally specialized and his missions are highly classified. When the king learns of a plot that could not only undermine the monarchy but also compromise the stability of the entire nation, he orders Fin to locate the perpetrators. When Fin discovers a local investigative reporter has knowledge of the plot, he suspects they are guilty of collaborating with the enemy. Leonora "Leo" Rossi is no enemy of the state but she does have a gift for sniffing out rot and exposing it to the world. Fin is surprised to learn the Leo Rossi isn't, as he mistakenly assumed, a man. But rather a feisty attractive redhead who doesn't ask permission and takes no prisoners. What begins as an adversarial relationship between Fin and Leo morphs into a strategic partnership as they work together to expose a consortium of powerful men determined to conceal years of financial abuse. Will Fin and Leonora expose the truth? Can they really trust one another? Or will the powerful forces working against them succeed in toppling a five hundred year old monarchy?

Love and Trust

At the heart of every romantic suspense story is the theme of love and trust. Characters must learn to not only trust each other despite their fears and insecurities, but to trust themselves. This theme is particularly evident in the relationships I’ve crafted, where vulnerability plays a crucial role in their development.

Danger and Redemption

The element of danger adds an exciting layer to the narrative. Characters are often faced with life-threatening situations that force them to confront their pasts and make difficult choices. This theme of redemption is woven throughout the series, as characters seek to overcome their struggles and find peace.

Secrets and Revelations

Secrets are a driving force in romantic suspense. Each character harbors their own secrets, which can either bring them closer together or tear them apart. The gradual revelation of these secrets keeps the story engaging and the reader eager to uncover the truth.

Writing Process and Challenges

Writing a romantic suspense series is no easy feat. It requires careful planning and a deep understanding of character development and plot structure. Here’s a glimpse into my writing process and the challenges I faced along the way.

Creating Reference Materials

Before diving into the series, I have a good idea of where I wanted to take the plot lines for each book. These ideas lived onlyin my head. I have detailed in another post that the writing for book one was fast and furious. I learned a lesson that I needed to take some time after completing the book to organize myself and my writing. I developed in-depth location references to document what I had already committed on paper about those locations to ensure consistency across the books. I developed profiles for the characters, documented the series arc and high-level story lines, and consolidated my research notes, and made a list of open threads in the book 1 plot that needed to be addressed in a future book. This took some time, but it has been worthwhile. I am better organized to begin the process of writing book 2 and will internalize the lessons I learned from book 1 as I move forward - ensure that decisions I make relative to story, characters, locations, etc. are updated in the appropriate place.

Outlining the Plot

Unlike my process for book 1, I have spent considerable time outlining the plot for book 2. This has involved mapping out key events in the story, character arcs and motivations including their strengths, weaknesses, and fatal flaw, and plot twists that will keep readers guessing. I want to ensure that the suspense is well-paced and both intertwines with and supports the romantic elements.

Character Development

Creating relatable and dynamic characters is essential in any story. I have spent time developing backstories, motivations, and conflicts for each character. This process allows me to understand their desires and fears, making their journeys more authentic and helping me convey their dialogue in a way that is authentic and consistent.

Balancing Romance and Suspense

One of the biggest challenges is finding the right balance between romance and suspense. My goal is to ensure that neither element is overshadowed by the other, which requires consideration related to pacing and timing. My intent is that action and suspense never exist for the mere sake of it, but rather the elements of action and suspense serve as a means to further the story.

Engaging with Readers

Connecting with readers is a vital part of the writing journey. I recognize that engaging with my audience will not only help build a community but also provide valuable feedback. Here are some ways I hope to connect with readers:

Social Media

As a new writer and as someone of a particular generation less accustomed to using social media, my goal is to learn about it. I hope to actively share updates about my writing process, character insights, and snippets from the books on social media in the future as a means to interact with readers and create excitement around the series.

Book Signings, Events, and Book Clubs

Each book in the series will be available to order in paperback. It would be a dream to participate in a book signing or literary event if the opportunity arises. I also welcome the opportunity to speak with members of book clubs interested in discussing my stories.

What’s Next for the Series?

I’m both hard at work developing book 2 and continue to brainstorming ideas for the future installments. The possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to see where the journey takes me.
